Efflorescence and ice nucleation in ammonium sulfate particles: Analysis of experimental results using scaled nucleation theory
نویسندگان
چکیده
Temperature-dependent efflorescence and ice nucleation results of ammonium sulfate aerosol obtained from flow tube studies are analyzed using a newly developed model based on scaled nucleation theory. The presented thermodynamic model defines trajectories of constant reduced nucleation barrier height as a function of temperature and yields simple analytic expressions for the liquid-solid nucleation boundaries. Within the context of the model the experimental results are interpreted in terms of surface enthalpy, entropy and nucleus size. These thermodynamic properties, along with a full thermodynamic model, can be then used to predict changes in the composition and phase of ammonium sulfate particles over the wide range of relative humidity and temperature conditions found in the atmosphere.

Temperature-Dependent Heterogeneous Efflorescence of Mixed Ammonium Sulfate/Calcium Carbonate Particles
In this paper, we report observations on single internally mixed ammonium sulfate/calcium carbonate microparticles. Deliquescence and efflorescence relative humidities for this mixed system are reported. The slightly soluble CaCO3 has a negligible effect on the deliquescence relative humidity and the concentrationdependent water activities. Mixed particles at 298 K were observed to exist in two...
متن کاملInhibition of efflorescence in mixed organic-inorganic particles at temperatures less than 250 K.
It is now well recognized that mixed organic-inorganic particles are abundant in the atmosphere. While there have been numerous studies of efflorescence of mixed organic-inorganic particles close to 293 K, there are only a few at temperatures less than 273 K. Understanding the efflorescence properties of these particles at temperatures less than 273 K could be especially important for predictin...
متن کاملInternally mixed sulfate and organic particles as potential ice nuclei in the tropical tropopause region.
Cirrus clouds are ubiquitous in the tropical tropopause region and play a major role in the Earth's climate. Any changes to cirrus abundance due to natural or anthropogenic influences must be considered to evaluate future climate change. The detailed impact of cirrus clouds on climate depends on ice particle number, size, morphology, and composition. These properties depend in turn on the nucle...
متن کاملSynthesis of Zinc-Sulfate Nano Particles and Detection of Their Induction Time, Nucleation Rate and Interfacial Tension
The production of zinc sulfate is important both medically and agriculturally. If zinc sulfate is produced without agglomeration at the nanoscale, its absorption in the body is more and faster. In this research, the induction time parameter is assessed for nucleation of zinc sulfate nanoparticles at room temperature and various supersaturations using acetone (as anti-solve...
متن کاملContact efflorescence as a pathway for crystallization of atmospherically relevant particles.
Inadequate knowledge of the phase state of atmospheric particles represents a source of uncertainty in global climate and air quality models. Hygroscopic aqueous inorganic particles are often assumed to remain liquid throughout their atmospheric lifetime or only (re)crystallize at low relative humidity (RH) due to the kinetic limitations of efflorescence (salt crystal nucleation and growth from...
